Welcome to First Line Fridays. What is First Line Fridays?? It’s where we share the first line only of a book we are currently reading, or one that is on our shelves. This week’s first is from All She Left Behind by Jane Kirkpatrick.

Here is the first line:
Love came later, when his words reached out to catch her as she fell, offering a cushion of comfort that held her and began the healing before she even knew the depth of ache and loss she carried.

I’ve only read one or two other books by Ms. Kirkpatrick, so I’m excited to give another one a go. It looks like a good read!
Here’s more about the book:

All She Left Behind by Jane Kirkpatrick
Published: September 5th,2017
352 pages

Already well-versed in the natural healing properties of herbs and oils, Jennie Pickett longs to become a doctor. But the Oregon frontier of the 1870s doesn’t approve of such innovations as women attending medical school. To leave grief and guilt behind, as well as support herself and her challenging young son, Jennie cares for an elderly woman using skills she’s developed on her own. When her patient dies, Jennie discovers that her heart has become entangled with the woman’s widowed husband, a man many years her senior. Their unlikely romance may lead her to her ultimate goal–but the road will be winding and the way forward will not always be clear. Will Jennie find shelter in life’s storms? Will she discover where healing truly lives?

Through her award-winning, layered storytelling, New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick invites readers to leave behind their preconceived notions about love and life as they, along with Jennie, discover that dreams may be deferred–but they never really die. Based on a true story.

  1. Great first line! Looks like I’ve got another book to add to my TBR. 🙂

I’m sharing about “The Day the Angels Fell” by Shawn Smucker on my blog today, but I’m going to share the first line from the book I’m currently reading, “Under Fire” by Linda Shenton Matchell.

“Ruth Brown swiped the perspiration beads off her upper lip as her’s sister’s vacant coffin dropped into the ground with a dull thud.”

  2. Andrea Stephens

That looks like a good book! I’m adding it to my wish list.

My first line is from The Outlaw’s Second Chance by Angie Dicken
The Cherokee Strip September 15, 1893
Aubrey Huxley rushed over when her father shoved his bony finger against the customer’s shoulder.

    Happy Friday!

  3. Gripping first line!

My first line is coming from the next book I’m hoping to read (okay, honest truth, I’ve already started it but have set it aside a week or two).
“Joyanna Shein glanced at her parents. She knew there was something wrong…there had been something wrong for days.”
A Question of Honor, by Jesseca Wheaton

  4. Paula S.

The grandest adventure of her life waited on the other side of these tracks. That or the most humiliating debacle she’d ever created Either way, there was no going back. From Head in the Clouds by Karen Witemeyer.
    Jane’s book looks really good!

  5. Becky Smith

Happy Friday! My first line (sorry but actually two lines) is from Outlaw Angel by Miralee Ferrell:

“Angel Ramirez woke with a start, her heart pounding a rolling beat in her chest. Someone was in her room.”

  6. What a beautiful first line!

My first line today is from the book I’m currently reading, Embracing Hope by Janell Butler Wojtowicz:

Drew McKinley twisted he gold wedding band around and around his finger then made a tight fist.

Yay for the weekend and some reading time!

  7. I just received this book in the mail. Cannot wait to begin reading it!

I am currently reading Many Sparrows by Lori Benton. What an AMAZING book. My first line comes from chapter two:

“Clare Margaret Inglesby, twenty-six years of age and eight months with child, wondered how she’d come to this: trapped in a jolting wagon advancing into perilous wilderness” (5).

  8. Paula S.

My first line is : from an Inconvenient Beauty by Kristi Ann Hunter.
The line between boy and man was never murkier than when a father died too soo. Leaving his son to walk through the foibles of youth while shouldering the responsibilities of adulthood.
