Synopsis:
Ann dreams of a marriage proposal from her poetic suitor, Eli-until Will Hanby shows her that nobility is more than fine words.

On a small farm in 19th-century Ohio, young Ann Miller is pursued by the gallant Eli Bowen, son of a prominent family. Eli is the suitor of Ann’s dreams. Like her, he enjoys poetry and beautiful things and soon, he will move to the city to become a doctor.

Ann travels to Pittsburgh, accompanying her father on business. There she meets Will Hanby, a saddle-maker’s apprentice. Will has spent years eking out an existence under a cruel master and his spirit is nearly broken. But Ann’s compassion lights a long-dark part of his soul. Through his encounters with Ann’s father, a master saddler, Will discovers new hope and courage in the midst of tremendous adversity.

When the Millers must return to Ohio and their ministry there, Will resolves to find them, at any cost. If Will can make it back to Ann, will she be waiting?

My Review:
Rosslyn Elliot is a wonderfully talented author! I can’t begin to tell you how deeply this novel moved me. This author took emotional turmoil of an apprentice who’s master is a mean and cruel hearted man, mixed it with the emotions of a young lady seeking to find God’s will and the man of dreams, and gave us a novel that will not only take your breath away, it will sweep you away into a place in history that so many tend to forget.

Among the amazing characters of Will and Ann, Ms. Elliot shows us a deeper and truly emotional issue….runaway slaves. I sat here reading about Will seeking a better life away from the abuse and hatred, and Ann who is realizing that God has so much more in store for her, and I truly became a part of this debut novel. I become a bit of Will, I became a bit of Ann, and I even became a bit of Jacob….that cruel and abusive man. It was an amazing trip back into time. As Ann and her family became a part of helping the slaves escape, I felt every emotional thought that Ann dealt with. A truly powerful feeling.

The rich historic detail to the underground railroad and helping slaves to seek freedom, never ceases to amaze me. I can’t imagine what those people went through. It is an eye opening experience. Will’s determination to seek a better life, and his feelings for Ann, was a wonderful moving piece to the story and I found myself often smiling throughout the novel.

I highly recommend Ms. Elliot’s debut novel with 5 Books and two thumbs up. This is an emotional journey of God’s guidance, hope, love and perseverance. Without that hope, without that love of God’s grace, life wouldn’t be the same. This novel is extremely thought provoking and one that shouldn’t be missed by any reader! I can’t wait to see what Ms. Elliot has in store for her new fans.
