About the Book:
Phil Pescoe, the 37-year-old emergency physician at Deaconess Hospital in San Francisco, becomes alarmed by a dramatic increase in the number of deaths on the East Annex (the Alzheimer’s Ward). The deaths coincide with the initiation of a new drug study on the annex where a team of neurologists have been administering “NAF”—an experimental and highly promising treatment for Alzheimer’s disease—to half of the patients on the ward.
About the Author:
Christopher Stookey, MD, is a practicing emergency physician, and he is passionate about medicine and health care. However, his other great interests are literature and writing, and he has steadily published a number of short stories and essays over the past ten years. His most recent essay, “First in My Class,” appears in the book BECOMING A DOCTOR (published by W. W. Norton & Co, March 2010); the essay describes Dr. Stookey’s wrenching involvement in a malpractice lawsuit when he was a new resident, fresh out of medical school. TERMINAL CARE, a medical mystery thriller, is his first novel. The book, set in San Francisco, explores the unsavory world of big-business pharmaceuticals as well as the sad and tragic world of the Alzheimer’s ward at a medical research hospital. Stookey’s other interests include jogging in the greenbelts near his home and surfing (he promises his next novel will feature a surfer as a main character). He lives in Laguna Beach, California with his wife and three dogs.
My Review:
As a lover of crime and medical TV dramas like CSI, Law and Order, ER and House, I love to read about them too. There’s something about those thrills of suspense that fascinate me. In fact, reading the dramas is my new love over watching them on TV. I find that an author who creates wonderful dramas about medicine (especially since I’m a Pharmacy Technician) and crime, really know how to make it come to live, so much more so than any TV program can. Christopher Stookey is a doctor and new author, and really puts that perspective into show, with his new debut novel, Terminal Care. While this story is not a Christian based story, with some mild use of language, it is still a thrilling, captivating suspense novel that will leave you dying for more!
Phil Pescoe and Carol Wong are the main characters in this awesome new novel, and, with deeply chiseled personalities, the bring this medical mystery to life. The reader will get sucked into the whirl wind and fast paced drama of Deaconness Hospital. You’ll feel apart of the adrenaline rushing blood pumping medical team, as they work to find out what’s causing Alzheimer’s patients to code. Is it just happenstance or is a pharmaceutical company to blame? The mystery mixes with romances in this new page turning debut.
This 4 star novel of suspense is awesome medicine for the medical suspense loving soul. Blended with that bit of romance, it’s the perfect read for almost any genre lover. I definitely recommend this debut novel and will hoping for more from this awesome author turned author!
